Family Time

Saturday, April 19, 2014

We took the bus to see Vlada and Blanka. We visited them in their apartment. Blanka made a lot of nice snacks. The “little breads” and “single bites” are a traditional thing to offer visitors in the Czech Republic. “Little breads” are slices of soft white bread (like French bread but not crunchy on the outside). The bread is topped with butter or potato salad and decorated with deli meats, eggs and vegetables. “Single bites” are smaller versions of the breads. They are made on slices of rolls (size of a single bite) with some type of a spread and piece of deli meat or vegetable. We also put a toothpick in each bite for easy picking.
On the bus in Kladno

Dan (Kat’s nephew) came to visit for a little while. It was nice to see him and it was also nice that he was not shy to speak English with Steve.

Since Blanka made a lot of food, we decided to eat meal she was going to make for lunch for dinner instead. The weather was nice and after Dan left we took a walk to the playground at Sletiste. Sletiste is a large park in Kladno with a huge playground, athletic stadium for track and field, rollerblading trail, walking trails and rope courses. The playground was full of kids. Stevie and Hannah played on a round about with an older boy who was telling all of the other kids that they did not speak Czech. Soon they invented a game “Hello Pepsi – Good bye Pepsi” that involved the kids spinning around with Pepsi bottle in the middle.

After the time at playground, we walked back to Blanka’s and Vlada’s apartment and we had dinner there. Food was delicious – Blanka is a great cook and makes everything from scratch.

After dinner we took the bus back to Kat’s mom’s apartment.

Vlada, Blanka and Denisa (Kat’s niece) came to visit on Monday afternoon. Kat and mom made some snacks. We also made chili (which we probably liked more than Kat’s family) and Czech potato pancakes. We shared pictures from the first part of our trip.
